Volunteer

There is a light in this world, a healing spirit more powerful than any darkness we may encounter.  We sometimes lose sight of this force when there is so much suffering and pain.  Then suddenly the spirit will emerge through the lives of ordinary people who hear a call and answer in extraordinary ways.  - Mother Teresa

counselor camper woodsThank you for your interest in volunteering with Chesapeake Life Center. Volunteers are vital members of our team, serving in a variety of capacities. Volunteers provide a caring presence either in person or by phone to support individuals on the grief journey.  Volunteers may serve by facilitating grief support groups, calling bereaved Hospice of the Chesapeake family members, spending a weekend companioning a child at Camp Nabi or a teen at Phoenix Rising, or assisting in the office.  Many of our volunteers enrich our team by selecting a position which fits their prior experience or expertise.

We are flexible and recognize that many volunteers will seek new opportunities with Chesapeake Life Center for personal growth and to meet their own needs.  Many find the connection and heart work they perform here at Chesapeake Life Center very rewarding and, for some it is a way of giving back after their own personal grief experience.

What is covered in our training?
Our trainings allow volunteers to explore common grief themes as well as the unique ways people may experience grief.  Attention will be given to how grief may affect a person's life: physical, emotional, spiritual, social and cognitive as well as an overview of hospice care. In-service trainings are offered during the year to support our volunteers by expanding knowledge and addressing areas of interest.
